CNC Ball Screw: overview
Pick a CNC ball screw by diameter, lead and length. For a ball screw for CNC router axes, 16 mm and 20 mm screws with 5 or 10 mm leads are the usual choice; heavier gantries use 25 mm or 32 mm. Most listed screws are rolled ball screws, which suit routers well. If your machine uses a ball screw 1204 (12 mm, 4 mm lead) for a small axis, send the length and end details and we will check availability.

Ball screws are named by diameter and lead: an SFU 2005 is 20 mm diameter with a 5 mm lead, so one screw turn moves the nut 5 mm. These are the sizes in our current catalogue.

CNC Ball Screw: frequently asked questions
Which ball screw is best for a CNC router?
For most small and mid-size CNC routers, a 16 mm or 20 mm rolled ball screw such as R16-5 or SFU 2005 works well on the Z axis and short axes. Use a 10 mm lead (R20-10 or SFU 2510) for faster travel. For long X and Y axes, rack and pinion is usually better than a long screw.
What does 1605 or 2510 mean on a ball screw?
The first two digits are the screw diameter in millimetres and the last two are the lead in millimetres. A 1605 ball screw is 16 mm diameter with a 5 mm lead; a 2510 is 25 mm diameter with a 10 mm lead, so the nut moves 10 mm per turn.
