Does an ATC air cooled spindle need compressed air?
Yes. Every ATC spindle, air cooled or water cooled, needs clean, dry compressed air to release the tool holder. The air goes to the drawbar piston only during a tool change and to the air seal if fitted. Use a filter-regulator and set the pressure given on the spindle's data sheet.
Is an ATC air cooled spindle good for continuous work?
For wood and panel processing, yes, as long as the fan has free airflow and the cooling fins are kept clean of dust. For long low-speed metal cuts or very hot workshops, an ATC water cooled spindle with a chiller keeps a steadier temperature.
