Shaft coupling types for CNC machines
A CNC coupling must transmit torque without backlash while forgiving slight misalignment between motor and screw. Aluminium flexible coupling designs (beam, bellows or jaw type) are light and suit stepper motor coupling and servo motor coupling jobs. A jaw coupling uses an elastomer spider between two hubs, damping vibration. For a coupling for ball screw drives, match each bore to its shaft, for example a 6.35 to 8mm coupling between a NEMA 23 stepper and a small screw, or an 8x10 coupling.

Which coupling should I use for a stepper motor?
Use a backlash-free aluminium flexible coupling or a jaw coupling with bores that match the stepper shaft and the screw end exactly. For NEMA 23 motors with 6.35 mm or 8 mm shafts, a small beam or jaw coupling is typical; for NEMA 34, use a larger, higher-torque coupling. Avoid rigid couplings, which load the bearings.
How do I align a flexible shaft coupling?
Mount the motor and screw so their shafts are as close to in line as possible, then fit the coupling with both shafts fully inserted and the clamp screws tightened to the specified torque. Turn the screw by hand through a full revolution; it should turn smoothly with no tight spot. Shim or adjust the motor if it binds.
